The Peique family owned a small vineyard and had been making small batches of wine for many years; after a couple of years of bottling tests, in 2001 they finally decided to build a small winery and make a qualitative leap, thanks to Jorge, one of the sons of Luis Peique, who is a professional oenologist and works for an important wine group every day.
The vineyard has 40 hectares divided between their own vineyards and the neighbours vineyards who can't look after them. This vineyard is formed by small plots ranging between 0.2 and 1 hectare, located between 450 and 600 metres of altitude, with the influence of an Atlantic climate, partly continental and mild.
Currently, Bodegas Peique produces a wide range of wines that express the terroir of its vineyards and the philosophy that has been created during the last three family generations in Valtuille de Abajo.
The harvest is performed manually. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they go through a pre-fermentation maceration for 3-5 days at 4-6ºC. They go through alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel deposits. Once it ends, they go through maceration with their skins for 10-25 days. This wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Before it is launched on the market, it is left to stand in the bottle for a minimum of 12 months.
Peique Viñedos Viejos Crianza is a wine made from Mencía, from vineyards that are between 45 and 55 years old, located on hills at 450-580 metres of altitude on sandy and clay soils. This wine is ample, unctuous and intense with the maximum expression of the elegant rusticity of the Mencía in this area.
Allergens: Contains sulphites.
